The main goal of Run Around the World is to encourage children to walk, cycle or take public transport to school instead of being driven by their parents. At many schools, the number of cars dropping children off has become a problem. These cars produce CO₂ emissions, add traffic and noise around schools, and sometimes stop in unsafe places, such as on the road. This puts children at risk and takes away an opportunity for them to be active.

In Run Around the World, the distances travelled to school by all participating children are recorded each week. Together, they add up to a total distance, which the participating classes use to continue their shared journey on Google Earth. Along the way, they can explore the countries they pass through and connect their journey with lessons across many subjects, from geography to current events.

Run Around the World is a sustainable mobility project with many benefits:

  • Climate protection

  • More movement and better health for everyone

  • A safer, more pleasant environment around schools

  • Less stress

  • Learning opportunities across many subjects

  • High motivation among pupils
